Finding freedom in the ordinary

Something I have been thinking about a lot lately is how to do this freelance life right. Rationally I know that there is no right or wrong, but sometimes I wish that there was a guidebook for being a freelancer - and for doing life I guess.

From Instagram to Linkedin, networking and taxes, when you are a freelancer people keep trying to reach you with lots of advice of things you must do to be successful. I honestly find this quite funny, cause who knows what success really means?

Success is such a subjective thing. Yet I am constantly wondering why I chose are rather unconventional way to live my life but am still believing in conventional definitions of success. It can be quite hard to stand on your own, validating yourself in your work and making up your own rules, without any structure that you can rely on. It is entirely up to me how I spend my life and I feel that this is an immense amount of freedom that I rarely appreciate or actually make use of.

Which is way taking a few days off during working hours seemed like such a revolutionary thing to do. I had the pleasure of accompanying my partner Chris Kronseder on a recent assignment, photographing a tiny house in the German countryside, pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

A luxury most people dream of, to be able to spontaneously take your things and take a couple days off when you need them. Yet I rarely manage to do that, as I am often drowning in my never-ending to do list. But seriously, who doesn’t have one of those, we are all extremely busy.

Sitting by the fire overlooking the blooming fields, lots of tiny birds chirping and building their nests reminds you of the importance of the little things in life.

A good meal, time with your loved once, time under the sun. Nature has this incredible way of grounding you. Living in a flat in the city and seeing more concrete than trees, I truly miss being outside whenever you want to.

So it should come as no surprise that this little trip has been nothing but wonderful. A breath of fresh air helping me to realize, that success might actually be me being able to take this trip. To be able to freely decide how I spend my time. Success, at least to me, might be feeling free.
